Queen, Local

$25.00

June 2010 delivery only.

Queen honey bee. RIMA is an acronym for the states of RI and MA from where the queen is bred. This is an experimental project to raise local queens. You are welcome to come to one of our two queen yards and select your queen from our "Queen Condo" hives.

A condo hive is a special hive divided into four section containing two or four full brood frames and nurse bees. The queen has the run of the comb into which she can lay eggs. The more common practice is to hold queens in queen banks.

The queen bank holds several, if not dozens, of queens in shipping cages where the queen is confined until she is sold. Over time, if not sold right away, the queen can be damaged and lay poorly or not at all when introduced into your hive.

  • All queens are marked.
  • Ask your breeder if they hold their queens in queen banks and for how long!
  • Please call ahead as we cannot guarantee that we will have local queens available during the early spring months.
